Help keep infections at bay

Hand washing is the most effective way to prevent the spread of infections in hospitals. Please wash your hands regularly and remind your visitors to do the same.

Ask your family and friends not to visit you if they have a cold, respiratory illnesses or any other contagious condition.

Medication and Safety

It is advisable to bring into hospital any prescribed or over-the-counter medications you may be taking at home. You will need to inform your doctor or nurse of any medications used. Where possible, please also bring a list of your medications.

Your doctor will decide whether you should continue, change the dosage or otherwise discontinue the medication during your stay.

For your own safety and with a view to monitoring your medication needs, you are not allowed to keep medications in your room with the exception of those prescribed by your doctor and administered by the nursing staff.

Please inform your doctor or nurse if you are allergic to any medications or you have had previous allergic reactions to medication, food or latex-containing products.

Get involved in your own care

Provide us with as many details as possible regarding your medical history and any medications you are taking.

Feel free to discuss your treatment with your doctor or nurse. It is important that you understand the information given to you and that you agree on everything. Do not hesitate to ask again if you have any queries.

Please tell your doctor or nurse if you experience any pain. Generally, most pain can be controlled. You and your care team can work together to relieve your pain.

We suggest that you nominate one relative who can talk to the medical staff. This spokesperson can then update your friends and family, if you wish so.

Fall prevention

Some people are particularly vulnerable to falling while in hospital. This is due to the fact that medical conditions, side effects from medications or surgeries can weaken them or affect their balance. Besides, medical equipment and unfamiliar surroundings may hinder their mobility.

We aim to protect you from any harm, but we need your help.

We undertake to:
Carry out a falls risk assessment when you are admitted to hospital.
Establish what measures can be taken to prevent accidental falls during your stay with us.
Help you get out of bed, help you to the toilet where necessary.
Provide you with a walking frame or similar walking aid as necessary.
Leave the nurse call button and those personal belongings you may need within easy reach.
Keep your bed at its lowest position. It is advisable to leave lateral bed rails raised when you are in bed to prevent falling from bed while sleeping.
We ask that, either you or a relative:
Do tell a nurse if you have sustained a fall over the past months.
Do ask for help when required.
Do ensure you wear appropriate footwear and do keep your room uncluttered to walk around.
Do inform staff if there are any spills of liquid on the floor to wipe them up straightaway.
Do leave the nurse call button within reach when you are alone in your room and please do inform your nurse if you are left on your own and you are at risk of falling.
